‘ How is the importance of mise-en-scene and/or sound in creating meaning and generating response in the films you have studied ?’

The films City Of God rely on the uses of the mise-en-scene and sound that accompanies the screening. City Of God uses mise-en-scene right from the beginning of the film where we see a knife in the opening scene this clip shows us a knife being sharpened with fast cuts / edit with an accompanied mise-en-scene the non diegetic sound that follows is a fast pasted Brazil music . This film uses a non-linear narrative through out this film. We are shown veg’s and chickens being prepared for soup. A close up is used on a chicken tied up to signify that know one can escape the city of god which follows with P.O.V shots of the chicken watching the other chickens been plucked which connotes the killings and plucking of each gang member who lives in the City Of God which is how this is filmed by showing the audience Rockets view on the Slums. The chicken runs away from its death where the gangs chase the chicken we see Lil’ Ze with a gun in slow motion to signify that guns are used a lot in this film which is followed with a 180 degree circular motion of the camera to show the transition in the film to Lil’ Ze and Rocket being stuck in the middle if the issues and crimes that go on in The City Of God this transitions to the 60’s where the colour conotation’s change to a brighter saturated yellow colour to the previous scene. We see Rocket in a medium shot following the rule of 1/3’s with an open spacing of the sky and low buildings show more room for improvement. In one of the scene’s we see Lil’ Dice known as Lil’ Ze sat at the top of  build up of bricks this shows us the foundation of the making through out as we recognise that Lil’ dice is sat at the top of the bricks and is smoking pot to then what we later from the 60’s – 70’s – 80’s is the buildings growing bigger and Lil’ Ze gaining power and the colour becomes less saturated.
